Myopia - "Nearsightedness"

Myopia is a medical term for those who are unable to see far away/distant objects, but can see objects clearly up close.

Myopia is very common. It is seen in 30% of Canadians. It usually appears in individuals during the stages of childhood and can continue to increase in prescription up until the they reach 20 years old.

Myopia occurs when the cornea is too curved or the eyeball is too long. This causes light entering the eye to not focus on the retina correctly. This condition can appear spontaneously or can be hereditary.

This condition can be corrected with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses, but cannot simply be cured. Surgical procedures like LASIK, commonly known as "Laser Eye Surgery," can be eliminate the use of prescription glasses/contact lenses.
